Nutrition During Cancer Treatment: Simple Indian Meals That Help
By Dr. Ajay Kumar
What you eat during cancer treatment can make a real difference to how you feel, how your body tolerates therapy, and how quickly you recover.
General principles - Eat small meals every 2-3 hours instead of three large ones - Include protein in every meal (dal, paneer, curd, egg, fish, chicken) - Choose whole grains: brown rice, hand-pounded rice, ragi, jowar - Eat colourful vegetables and seasonal fruits - Stay hydrated — water, coconut water, buttermilk, light soups
When appetite is low Try idli with coconut chutney, soft khichdi with ghee, banana smoothies, or thin upma. Avoid strong smells if nausea is a problem.
Foods to limit Raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy, leftover food, and street food during chemotherapy — your immunity may be lower than usual.
What about 'cancer diets' on the internet? Most are unproven and some can be harmful. There is no single 'miracle food'. A balanced, home-cooked, traditional South Indian or coastal Karnataka diet — with the modifications above — works beautifully for most patients.
Always speak to your treating doctor before starting any supplement, juice fast, or alternative diet.
